Ephesus: Terrace house

One of the most amazing things about Ephesus is the fact that there was a spectacularly preserved apartment complex.  It was buried due to some earthquakes and landslides, so much of the art and mosaics were unexposed and still show some of their color.
One thing to note, these are rich peoples apartments, and it should be obvious as you go through the pictures

This is a bathroom in one apartment

Marble wall papering reconstructed and a floor mosaic that was reassembled

This whole room had marble wall papering.  They are slowly slowly reassembling it.  The perfect job for an obsessive puzzler

These were multistory buildings, as you can see here.  Lots of frescos in one of the apartments.

Interesting to think that none of the rooms had windows.  They were lit by light coming in from the open halls.  Put roofs on things and it would probably be quite dim.  but cool in the heat of summer...

a fancy basilica.  If you lived here I bet it was a good way to show off your riches to have people over to dinner in this room

The tour had us walking on these glass and stainless steel walkways.  Oddly enough, it kind of worked with the aesthetic.  kind of like the old french farmhouses people are restoring in a modern way. Just older

You can get a feel for rooms here.  and see the modern protective building

Some old pots

Upstairs in the frescoed place

A couple of mosaic floors.  I love mosaics!

You can even get a hint of redecorating, with designs covering designs on the walls

I believe this is a bathroom with plumbing.  The pipes moved hot air around to heat the house, or brought hot and cold water.

I think this channel was the waste removal (sewage)

Quite a hall, no?

This is a close up of the mosaic.  Some serious contortion and taking pictures between the treads of the stairs going on here.

A couple of pretty little rooms

Just a reminder that this building as actually destroyed in the earthquakes and there used to be much more to it.  A floor mosaic

Looking down into another apartment, with a fountain

Yes it was dirty and broken, but it was still nicer than many of the places I've lived!
