Oenoagda took so much more time than we thought, so we didn't have time to explore the other sites we had planned on that day. But man are we glad we decided to squeeze in Tlos. Tlos is a Lycian city on the northern end of the Xanthos valley. The sun was setting and a storm was coming in, so it was stunningly beautiful.
From the valley, the Ottoman fortress dominates the view
The agora
this space functioned as a stadium
You can see the remains of a very long fountain that dominated the agora
sunset does mean that the tombs were horribly backlit. but cool anyways
Asarkale village sits on top of much of the ruins
sunset views over the mountain range to the north
A cool tomb, or three
The Ottoman fortress
Isn't that light amazing?
Mountains to the south
Baths and theater from the fortress
Looking west. Magical
Fortress again. We just kept circling it and taking prettier and prettier pictures
More Ottoman (much later than Lycian if you aren't as steeped in Turkish history as I am) buildings
Heading up to the lookout
Me
Eric's panorama of the fortress and sunset
Again, back down on the agora. You can see the excavations of the agora area and the fountain (trough looking thing on the far side)
Oh, the light
Gotta love arches
This might be the market?
Gymnasium and baths? or a church. Hard to say. This town is 4000 years old and was continuously inhabited by Lycians, Greeks, Romans and Ottomans until the 19th century
You may not be able to see the birds, but there were many of them, going crazy in this amazing light
Now, I think this is the Byzantine church, but again...
Guard donkey for the baths
The stadium was closed off
Man oh man was it a beautiful detour though
